‘Blues and twos’ is based on the song Toutoi oi mpatsoi pou rthan tora, ‘Τούτοι οι μπάτσοι που ήρθαν τώρα’ by Yiannakis Ioannides. This piece is part of the early rebetika repertoire of America but it is not part of the tsimpita as it is a bouzouki based piece.
In ‘blues and twos’ the original melody is played in tsimpito style (the use of one guitar, both for melody and accompaniment and just a singer who is the guitarist). The structure of the song remains completely the same and the guitar’s tuning (from low to high) is D A D F A D. The original song is in Husseyin dromos or mode and this specific tuning resulted in having the first notes of each pentachord and tetrachord of the Husseyin promo as open strings. The accompaniment played by the guitar in the bass strings is the zeibekiko rhythm of 9/8. In this composition, I included field recordings from two protests in Athens and in Nicosia. The first recording was recorded at Exarchion Squares in 2019 which captures the sound of Molotov cocktails or bottle bombs and distant voices of protesters. The second field recording was recorded in Nicosia, February 13, 2021 during a protest of the ‘Ως Δαμέ'.
In this composition, I aligned both field recordings of protests together to create the illusion of a single protest. The synthesiser constructed harmonic drones based on the dromos and melody variations

GR:
τι γυρεύουν τέτοιαν ώρα;

These cops that have just come
These cops that have just come, vre
These cops that have just come, vre
These cops that have just come, out
What they are looking for at such time?
They came to arrest us,vre
They came to arrest us,vre
They came to arrest us
And the dice to take us.
And they were looking for dice vre,
And they were looking for dice vre,
And they were looking for dice vre,
And they find eight.
I play dice and I win, vre
I play dice and I win, vre
I play dice and I win,
And in poker I invest them.
I come by the fence, fence, vre
I come by the fence, fence, vre
I come by the fence, fence, vre
And I find you with a sailor.
